10th Feb. 2008 - On the tee...Tiger Woods
We go from Tiger's rival in my last post to Tiger's arrival in this one! News from the Woods household is that baby no.2 (and perhaps winner of the 2030 Open Championship...bets anyone?) has arrived which can mean only one thing. With Tiger himself saying he has been practicing "full tilt" recently his comeback can surely be only a matter of weeks away. I don't think he'll be quite as dominant straight away as he was when he left as one or two of his rivals - namely Garcia and Harrington have certainly picked up their games since he's been away, as well as a few new challengers have emerged in the shape of Villegas and Kim. What we will see however is how much these guys can maintain their good form when they look up and see Tiger's name on the leaderboard again - or has much their improvement been because they have felt more comfortable of him not being around? We'll see...
1st Feb. 2008 - Tiger's next rival?
In Rory McIlroy are we witnessing a future world no.1? Having secured his first tour title in Dubai today and leapt up into the top 20 of the world rankings at 19 years of age it certainly looks possible. I followed the kid round Valderrama last Autumn in a practice round before the Volvo Masters, and was amazed at how naturally he seems to play the game. He's rediculously long too, hitting Driver, 9 iron into the 7th hole there (ok it was downwind but it's nearly 500 yards!). A great role model for kids too as he plays quickly which could help the games seemingly growing sloooooow play problem. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on the leaderboards as he plays his first events in America over the next few months. Still needs a harcut though...
